Meet Dr. Priyanka Komandur, PhD, MPsych(Clin)

Hi there! I'm Dr. Priyanka Komandur, Founder and Clinical Psychologist at Heal & Thrive Clinical Psychology. I'm registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and I've had the privilege of walking alongside adults and adolescents for over 10 years, supporting them through a range of mental health challenges. Rooted in genuine empathy, I hold a deep belief in your innate capacity for healing and growth. I'm dedicated to providing a safe, collaborative space where we can explore your experiences, foster understanding, and equip you with the tools you need to move from coping to truly thriving.
My Approach To Therapy

My clients often tell me that I have a warm, gentle, and compassionate approach. My practice is grounded in evidence-based principles, primarily drawing from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Schema Therapy, Mindfulness-based Therapy, and Metacognitive Reflection and Insight Therapy (MERIT). I believe in a collaborative process, working with you to understand the unique challenges you face and to develop practical strategies tailored to your individual needs. My aim is to empower you with insight, coping skills, and lasting tools, fostering resilience so you can navigate life's complexities with greater confidence and live a more meaningful life.

What You Can Expect

Starting therapy is a significant step, and it's natural to have questions. My aim is to make your journey as comfortable and clear as possible. Here's what you can expect when you begin therapy with me at Heal & Thrive Clinical Psychology:

Getting Started (The First Steps)

-
Initial Contact:
-
Your journey may begin with a confidential inquiry (you may choose to email me or fill out my contact form). I offer a brief, complimentary phone consultation so we can discuss your needs, you can ask any questions, and we can determine if my services are the right fit for you. This is a no-obligation conversation designed for your comfort. If we determine my services are the right fit for you, we can then proceed to scheduling your first session.
-
Alternatively, you may decide to directly schedule your first session without having a phone consultation - you can email me, fill out my contact form, or click on the 'Book a Session' button at the top of the page to do so.
-
-
Paperwork: Before your first session, I'll send you some secure online forms, including a consent form and intake questionnaire, to ensure I have all the necessary information to best support you.

Your First Session or Initial Consultation (The Assessment)

-
A Gentle Exploration: The first session is primarily an opportunity for us to get to know each other. I'll listen attentively as you share what brings you to therapy and what you hope to achieve. I'll ask questions to gain a comprehensive understanding of your history, current challenges, and strengths.
-
Collaborative Goal Setting: Towards the end of the initial consultation, we'll establish clear, collaborative goals for our work. If you can't think of what your goals may be, that's completely okay, we can determine them together. This session is also a chance for you to experience my approach and ensure you feel comfortable and understood.

Ongoing Sessions (The Therapeutic Process)

-
A Safe & Collaborative Space: All sessions are conducted via secure online video, providing a confidential and comfortable environment from your chosen private space. Each session is a dedicated 50-minute slot where you can explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences without judgment.
-
Tailored Support: Our work will be highly collaborative and tailored to your unique needs and goals. We'll draw upon evidence-based strategies from CBT, Schema Therapy, and Mindfulness-based Therapy to help you gain insight, develop coping skills, and foster lasting change.
-
Focus on Empowerment: My aim is to empower you with deeper self-understanding and practical tools, so you can navigate life's complexities with greater confidence and move towards a more meaningful and thriving life.

Practicalities of Online Therapy

-
Technology & Confidentiality: We will use a secure, encrypted Telehealth platform for our video sessions, ensuring your privacy and data security are paramount. I'll provide clear instructions on how to connect prior to your first appointment.
-
Ensuring Privacy: Please ensure you are in a quiet, private space where you will not be interrupted during our sessions, to maintain confidentiality.
-
What You Need: All you need is a reliable internet connection, a computer/tablet/smartphone with a camera and microphone, and a private space.

Fees and Medicare

-
Fees & Rebates: My fees are outlined on my Fees page. If you are in Australia and have a valid Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP) from your GP, you may be eligible for Medicare rebates for your sessions. I can provide more details on this process during our initial consultation.

Taking the first step can feel big, but it's the start of a profound journey towards healing and growth & I'm here to support you every step of the way. If you're ready to explore how therapy can benefit you, please don't hesitate to contact me for an initial chat or to book your first session - You don't need a referral, just reach out and we'll find a time that works for your location and schedule.
